About the Program
Indigenous Studies explores solutions to contemporary issues faced by diverse Indigenous Peoples, Canadians and other peoples around the world. Drawing on Indigenous knowledge, perspectives, language, experiences, governments, cultures and economies, you'll critically examine topics such as treaties, settler-colonialism, decolonization, resurgence, revitalization, reconciliation, self-determination, sustainability, stewardship, MĂ©tis identities, Indigenous-Canadian relations, Indigenous-Black relations and the ongoing impacts of colonialism. Through courses in Indigenous ecological knowledge, languages, literatures, film, music, politics, education and contemporary issues, you'll learn how Indigenous ways of knowing are helping to address political, economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges. Located in AterĂłnto, the Greater Toronto Area, where Indigenous and settler communities reside, meet, trade and exchange ideas, York offers students a dynamic location to experience learning that connects Indigenous knowledge with action in solving local, regional, global and international challenges.

Applied Learning Opportunities
Indigenous Studies offers hands-on learning through community engagement, cultural experiences and experiential education, including access to optional paid co-op. You'll have opportunities to complete placements with Indigenous or supporting organizations, participate in community-based activities, and learn directly from Indigenous leaders and guest speakers. Through these experiences, Indigenous students can strengthen connections to Indigenous knowledge, practices and communities, while all students gain a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives and relationships with Indigenous and settler communities locally and globally. The program also creates opportunities to explore reconciliation, self-determination and social change while building communication skills and cultural awareness.
